Tip 3: Fresh is not best
Tip 3: Fresh is not best
Much like wine, soap gets better as it ages. After a soap is made and cut into bars, it needs to sit and cure for a minimum of 4-6 weeks. Technically you can use a bar as soon as you cut it, but the soap will melt quickly, have a weak lather and won't be as mild on your skin. Curing time allows more water to evaporate making a harder bar with better lather. I won't name names but there are some "craft" soap places that don't let soap cure because it means soaps dissolve faster and customers will buy more.
That's not me. And it's probably not most of the small handcrafted makers out there.
If you find an old soap in the back of your closet from several years ago and it looks normal, go ahead and use it. The scent may have faded but you'll be surprised at how great it works. You'll also notice it's less likely to break apart when the bar is almost fully used up.

Tip 4: Cut your bar in half*
This tip is perfect for those with kids who dig their nails into the bars of soap or leave them sitting on the tub floor after a bath. A smaller bar will dry faster (see Tip 1), fit better in your hand and will be less of a waste if it's not put on a proper soap dish to dry.
*Please note, bars made with 100% coconut oil and our shampoo bars are too brittle to cut. This includes Kokomo, Snow and None More Black.
Bonus Tip:Save your tiny pieces of soap by putting them in a soap bag. I have a "spare parts" soap bag in my shower for all the bits and bobs from the end of a bar. Once the bag is at least half full, I will then use the bag like a pre-soaped loofa and it makes a great lather with a one-of-a-kind scent. It's the perfect way to enusre you are washing tiny scraps down the drain.
